DairyNZ farmer events on freshwater proposal

27 September 2019

Dairy farmers are encouraged to attend a series of upcoming DairyNZ events and webinars which will delve into the Government’s Essential Freshwater package.

The Essential Freshwater package is a complex proposal with short timeframes and DairyNZ is hosting six regional events and an online webinar to help dairy farmers understand the package, what it might mean for them and how farmers can write an effective submission. These events are also an opportunity for DairyNZ to hear feedback from farmers and respond to their questions.

DairyNZ strategy and investment leader Dr David Burger said the DairyNZ team are working to understand the implications of the Essential Freshwater Package on the environment, and on dairy farming families and their communities.

“Since it was released, DairyNZ’s water quality scientists, policy experts and economists have been going through the detail of the Essential Freshwater package,” said Dr Burger. “These events are one way for dairy farmers to learn more about the proposal and what it could mean for them.

“The work underway within DairyNZ to understand water quality and economic implications of the proposed policies will also be outlined.”

The events will cover the Essential Freshwater Package proposals; the legislative process; what DairyNZ is doing; key points and concerns for regions; and the consultation process. There will be plenty of opportunity to ask questions.

“Our recent webinar had over 70 farmers listening in and the feedback was really positive. Farmers commented that it was a great way to learn about the package and not have to leave the farm,” said Dr Burger.

“We will also be talking about the submissions process and how farmers can get involved with providing feedback on the proposal before October 31.”
